About the Book

This study takes a fresh look at some prominent women writers of the period 1880-1900: Olive Schreiner, Sarah Grand, and George Egerton, as well as one not-so-prominent figure, Margaret Harkness. All of them were active in the debate concerning woman's "true nature" and role, and all were critical of the conventional ideal of the "womanly woman", with its emphasis on submissiveness and self-sacrifice. But they were also critical of the conventional Victorian "well-made" novel - a subject which, up to now, has been awarded very little interest by literary scholars, feminist or otherwise - but which forms the main focus of interest in Bjorhovde's book. While placing the writers and their work firmly in the socio-historical context of the late 19th century, "Rebellious Structures" is primarily a text-oriented study of the literary practices of these late-Victorian women writers. Maintaining that their writing is not so much flawed as experimental, Bjorhovde shows how a number of the theories and techniques generally associated with the rise of modernism after the turn of the century, were in fact both being formulated by and tried out by these writers.
