About the Author :
Avinash W. Joshi received his PhD from the University of Pune in 1967. He then worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, HH Wills Physics Laboratory, University of Bristol (UK), CCS University, Meerut, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, before moving to the University of Pune in 1984, from where he retired in 2002. He then worked as Honorary visiting Scientist at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Pune. He has written eight books and edited three. Some of his books have been translated into Chinese, Persian and other languages. His first Marathi book received the Maharashtra State Excellent Literature Award in 1996-97, and his Hindi book received the second prize of Rajbhasha Cell of DRDO in 2005. His current interests are physics education. Narayan C. Rana was with the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Pune. A graduate of the University of Calcutta, he had been with the Theoretical Astrophysics Group of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, since 1977. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Bombay in 1983. His research interests include the origin of cosmic microwave background radiation, origin of light elements in the Big Bang, origin and distribution of heavy elements in the galaxies, rotation of the earth, positional astronomy, and history of astronomy. He received the INSA Young Scientist Award for the year 1983 and the years best thesis award in the School of Physics, TIFR, the same year. He was actively involved in teaching physics and popularising astronomy. He had published over 50 scientific papers and 100 articles in various journals and magazines, and coauthored a book.
