Atom, Molecule and Spectrum

This book thus covers the topics of quantum chemistry and spectroscopy at the basic level as well as based on the model of UGC curriculum. These topics are taught at all Indian Universities. This book has been divided into five chapters, starting with historical background of the development of quantum chemistry, basic principles of quantum mechanics, atomic structure, molecular structure and spectroscopy. Special emphasis has been placed on the concepts here. The approach adopted here is to teach concepts through raising questions and then solving them. To understand these principles, problems have been discussed and solved after every concept, as well as, unsolved problems have also been given at the end of each chapter. The mathematical concepts used are very simple and the physical meaning of every mathematical concept used is explained so that the students understand the important role mathematics plays in the development of the subject. The physical concepts have also been explained by using diagrams. This book has been written with the intension to help the students understanding of the subject of quantum chemistry which dominates every branchof chemistry.

About the Author :
Prof. Dogra received Ph.D. degree in the Department of Chemistry. The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. Canada in 1970, followed by post-doctorate work in USA and Canada, before moving to Department of Chemistry I.I.T. Kanpur in 1973, where he stayed till his retirement, up to 2004. At I.I.T. Kanpur, he was involved both in undergraduate, engineering and science and post-graduate courses in Chemistry and Physical Chemistry in particular. His main area of research involved proton transfer and electron transfer reactions in the excited singlet state. He has authored over 160 research articles in National and International Journals, wrote two books and authored chapters in couple of books. He has been involved in the curriculum development of NCERT and also writing books for school teaching. He is also writing chapters for the CSIR e-learning program. He is a fellow of National Academy of Sciences and Indian National Academy of Sciences. He was elected as the Vice-President of Indian Chemical Society. He was on the editorial board of Indian Journal of Chemistry A and editorial board of INSA Proceedings till now. He is recipient of T.R. Seshadhari 70th birhtday memorial award from INSA and life time achievement award from Indian Chemical Society.
