About the Book

Beginning with the formulation of specific design problems, the book goes on to explain theories of failure. Factors involved in optimization of design are considered next, followed by a detailed description of static, transient and dynamic analysis. Finite element analysis is then explained followed by cyclic symmetric structures and stress analysis of structural members and machine components. Illustrative examples and case studies are presented throughout the book. Programming examples are illustrated through an extensive use of comments which make the underlying algorithm self-evident. Numerous practice problems have also been included throughout the book. With its wide coverage of topics and systematic style of presentation, this book would be extremely valuable for advanced mechanical engineering students as well as practising.

About the Author :
Dr. Rao V. Dukkipati is a Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering, and the Director of Graduate program at Fairfield University as well as a consultant in the field of road vehicle accident reconstruction. He is member of the Connecticut Academy of Sciences and Engineering (CASE), and a Fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineers (CSME). Dr. Dukkipati's other professional memberships include the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and SAE International. He has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma Sate University (1973), an MS in Mechanical Engineering from both the Andhra University, India (1969) and the University of New Brunswick, Canada (1971), a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Statistics from Andhra University (1969), and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Sri Venkateswara University, India (1966). Dr. Dukkipati's specialised areas of teaching and research include mechanical design, mechanics, vibrations, control systems, engineering system dynamics, economy and reliability, quality control, advanced engineering mathematics, vehicle dynamics and road vehicle accident reconstruction. Previously, Dr. Dukkipati worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft of Canada of the United Technologies Corporation in Montreal, Canada, and the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, Canada, the University of Windsor, Windsor, Canada, and the University of Toledo, Ohio. He is a licensed professional engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada. Dr. Dukkipati has published more than 300 papers in national and international journals and conferences and numerous technical reports. He has authored/co-authored more than 60 engineering books spanning a range of topics that includes vibrations, control systems, engineering system dynamics, economy and reliability, quality control, advanced engineering mathematics, robotics, numerical methods, kinematics and dynamics, railway vehicle dynamics, and road vehicle dynamics. Dr. Dukkipati was awarded the 2008 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) New England Section Outstanding Teacher Award. M. Ananda Rao received his B.E. degree from College of Engineering, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, M.E. (Machine Design) and M.E. (Industrial Engineering) from the same University and Ph.D. from Indian the Institute of Technology, Madras. He has been working in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam since 1971. He has published several papers in international journals. His current areas of research are machine dynamics, condition-monitoring and diagnostic studies, optimization and finite element methods, artificial neural networks and robotics. Rama Bhat, Ph.D. Eng., is a Fellow of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India). He is a holder of a NASA Award for Technical Innovation as a member of the team developing the Structured Synthesis System for Design and Optimization. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Srinivasanagar in 1966 and obtained his M.Tech and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from I.I.T. Madras. His research areas include Structural Dynamics, Mechanical Vibrations and Vehicle Dynamics. He is well known for his Boundary Characteristic Orthogonal Polynominals (BCOP) that he proposed for the first time in 1985, to study the vibration of structures using the Rayleigh Ritz method. More than 125 publications by several researchers around the world have appeared using Bhat's methods.
