About the Book

At every stage, the physics governing the process, its application and limitations are discussed in depth. In the third edition, several new problems with answers have been added at the end of many chapters. The chapter titled Measurements in Compressible Flow has been augmented with high speed wind tunnels, covering the type of supersonic tunnels, their design features, calibration, instrumentation and operating principles. With a strong emphasis on basic concepts and problem-solving skills, this text is suitable for a course Gas Dynamics/Compressible Flows/High-speed Aerodyna-mics both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and applied physics. The elegant and concise writing style of the book, along with illustrations and worked examples, makes it eminently suitable for self-study by scientists and engineers working in the field of gas dynamics in industries and research laboratories. Some of the distinguishing features of the book are : Concise coverage of the thermodynamic concepts to serve as revision of the background material. Logical and systematic treatment of fundamental aspects of gas dynamics, waves in the supersonic regime and gas dynamic processes. Extensive treatment of steady one-dimensional flow, normal shocks, oblique shock and expansion waves, Fanno flow and Rayleigh flow. In-depth presentation of potential equations for compressible flows, similarity rule and two-dimensional compressible flows. Discussion of the Method of Characteristics and the analytical relations of the coordinates for supersonic nozzle design. Introduction to measurements in compressible flows and optical flow visualization techniques. Introduction to rarefied gas dynamics and high-temperature gas dynamics. Numerous end-of-chapter problems to develop an orderly approach to problem-solving methodology. Solutions Manual for instructors containing the complete worked-out solutions to chapter-end problems.

About the Author :
ETHIRAJAN RATHAKRISHNAN is Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He is well known internationally for his research in the area of high-speed jets. The limit for the passive control of jets called Rathakrishnan Limit is his contribution to the field of jet research, and the concept of breathing blunt nose (BBN) which reduces the positive pressure at the nose and increases the low pressure at the base simultaneously, is his contribution to drag reduction at hypersonic speeds. He has published a large number of research articles in many reputed international journals. He is a Fellow of many professional societies, including the Royal Aeronautical Society. Professor Rathakrishnan serves as the Editor-in-Chief of International Review of Aerospace Engineering (IREASE) Journal. He has authored seven other books--Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, 2nd ed. (PHI Learning, New Delhi, 2005), Fluid Mechanics: An Introduction, 2nd ed. (PHI Learning, New Delhi, 2007) Gas Tables, 2nd ed. (Universities Press, Hyderabad, 2004), Instrumentation, Measurements, and Experiments in Fluids (CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, Boca Raton, 2007), Theory of Compressible Flows (Maruzen Co. Ltd., Tokyo, 2008), Gas Dynamics Work Book (Praise Worthy Prize, Napoli, 2010) and Applied Gas Dynamics (John Wiley & Sons, 2010).
