About the Book

They dwelt in the devil's lair, yet played notes in search of freedom. This is a work of literary nonfiction about survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp. In the 1940s, a young girl named Elsa was imprisoned in Auschwitz. Because of her mastery of the violin, she was brought together with a group of other girls of similar age who also excelled at playing instruments. Their original purpose was to serve the camp guards. Thus was born the women's orchestra of the concentration camp-an ensemble that gave the Nazis endless headaches. These young women, refusing to bow to fate, found themselves in hell, yet played the most powerful notes in pursuit of freedom. They played for the laborers heading to work, soothing their exhausted bodies. They played for fellow prisoners marching to their deaths, helping them face the end with a smile. They used their music to mock their tormentors... They inspired their fellow inmates, comforted the suffering, and defied brutality, allowing everyone imprisoned in the camp to feel a glimmer of love from their fellow human beings-and with it, the only weapon they had against the Nazis: the will to survive. More than forty years later, Elsa's son, Jean-Jacques, retraced his mother's footsteps, traveling through Germany, Belgium, Poland, Israel, and the United States to track down the other surviving members of the concentration camp women's orchestra, bringing to light a history that had remained buried for nearly eighty years.
