In der Gastronomie ist die Generation Y aufgrund ihrer Essgewohnheiten und ihres Lebensstils das wichtigste Marktsegment. Sie ist experimentierfreudig, wenn es darum geht, neue Speisen zu probieren. Ziel dieser Studie ist es, die Faktoren zu identifizieren, die die Essgewohnheiten der Generation Y beeinflussen, sowie die Faktoren, die den größten Einfluss auf die Essgewohnheiten haben. Die Generation Y umfasst alle Menschen, die zwischen 1977 und 1994 geboren wurden. Es handelt sich um die Generation mit den besten technischen Kenntnissen und dem größten technologischen Verständnis. Die Bevölkerung der Generation Y wird weltweit auf 2 Milliarden geschätzt, davon stammen 660 Millionen aus asiatischen Ländern. In Malaysia selbst macht die Generation Y etwa 40 % der malaysischen Bevölkerung aus. Es ist allgemein bekannt, dass die Generation Y über eine höhere Kaufkraft verfügt und zu den versierten Kunden zählt. Für diese Studie wurde eine qualitative Methode verwendet, und 16 Befragte wurden anhand der Kriterien ausgewählt und interviewt. Diese Studie ergab, dass die Essensvorlieben durch intrinsische und extrinsische Faktoren beeinflusst werden. Allerdings haben extrinsische Faktoren einen größeren Einfluss auf die Lebensmittelpräferenzen der Generation Y. Diese Studie wird nach einem besseren Verständnis der Generation Y zu Marketingstrategien beitragen. Der Gastgewerbe-, Gastronomie- und Tourismussektor wird von dieser Studie profitieren.
