About the Book

As supported in the reflections of readers like Daniel Pennac, Gabriel Zaid, and many others, the author reveals fallacies around the uncritical belief in books as an object of utility, instead recovering reading as an act of pleasure and leisure. With warmth and good humor, this book deals a well-deserved blow to cultural assumptions about the need to read, reveals structural failures in literacy programs, and unmasks the hypocrisy of a culture that lauds the humanizing benefits of consuming books while treating those who don't read as morally inferior. It demonstrates that a compulsory practice of reading alienates potential readers and contributes to a sense of cultural poverty in society.
