About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION “This book reflects on the omissions, misconduct, and negligence of the authorities in the Andrés Mendoza case. I hope each page brings awareness to society in order to stop femicides and get authorities to act more promptly upon receiving reports of gender-based violence and disappearances.” —Itzel Cruz, from the prologue For decades, Andrés Mendoza Celis committed femicide with absolute impunity in the Municipality of Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico. His last victim, thirty-four-year-old Reyna González Amador, disappeared May 14th, 2021. Her husband, Bruno Portillo, police officer and commander of the Tlalnepantla special forces, looked for her and found one of the worst crime stories in Mexico’s history: the biggest serial killer of women in Mexico—and probably the world—had been exposed. However, the horror didn’t end there, since a journalist’s investigation would reveal that Mendoza Celis ate his victims as well. This is the full story of the Cannibal of Atizapán. In his book, lawyer and journalist Javier Tejado Dondé shares everything that was behind the case. From testimonies of several parties involved in the investigation, Tejado establishes different lines of questioning by the authorities and follows legal proceedings. He even interviewed Andrés Mendoza Celis himself to put together his psychological profile. Furthermore, this book narrates the search for justice by the relatives of the victims and the impact the case had in society and in Mexican politics, to the point of bringing about a reform to the legal system—called “Reyna Law”—to impose more severe sanctions to femicides. The Cannibal of Atizapán is the account of one of the most sinister stories in living memory, as well as a record of the indolence and inadequacy of the authorities, abandoning and revictimizing the families of the victims. It is also a call to society, to stress that such situations have to stop, and to that end, denouncing is important.
