Sus aportaciones científicas y literarias le han valido un gran reconocimiento. Autor de textos de psiquiatría, novelas y libros de historias, actualmente ejerce la práctica privada de la psiquiatría en Palo Alto y San Francisco, California. Entre sus novelas más conocidas se encuentran El día que Nietzsche lloró y Un año con Schopenhauer, traducidas en todo el mundo y recomendadas por los lectores, con cientos de miles de ejemplares vendidos.
