Musiker sind ständig auf Reisen, auch heute noch. Mit PKW und moderner Kommunikation ist dies freilich ungleich leichter zu bewältigen als im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert. W. A. Mozart reiste fast ein Drittel seines Lebens. Louis Spohr, ganz reisender Virtuose, konstruierte eigens einen mobilen Harfenkasten für seine Frau. Felix Mendelssohn bereitete seine Reisen durch eine Unzahl von Briefen vor. Telemann reiste dem Grafen von Promnitz bis ins ferne Schlesien nach, "global player" der Oper wie Hasse oder die großen Primadonnen reisten ständig zwischen mehreren Opernzentren hin und her. In Zusammenarbeit mit den "Europäischen Mozart-Wegen" fand im Mai 2009 in Augsburg eine Tagung zu diesem Thema statt, die verschiedene Aspekte des Reisens vom frühen 18. bis ins frühe 19. Jahrhundert, von der höfischen Zeit bis in die Epoche der Virtuosen und der Salons behandelte. Im Fokus standen neben W. A. Mozart, dem reisenden Musiker par excellence, besonders die Musikjubilare des Jahres 2009: Haydn und Händel, Spohr und Mendelssohn.

Christoph-Hellmut Mahling, geb. 1932 in Berlin, Studium der Musikwissenschaft an den Universitäten Tübingen und Saarbrücken bei Walter Gerstenberg, Georg Reichert, Joseph Müller-Blattau und Walter Salmen. 1962 Promotion ("Studien zur Geschichte des Opernchors") und 1972 Habilitation am Musikwissenschaftlichen Institut der Universität des Saarlandes Saarbrücken bei Walter Wiora ("Orchester und Orchester-Musiker in Deutschland von 1700 bis 1850"). Seit 1981 Professur an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz; bis März 2000 Leiter des dortigen Musikwissenschaftlichen Instituts. Ab 1969/70 Mitglied des Schriftleitergremiums der Zeitschriften "Die Musikforschung" (bis 1981) und der "International Review of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music". 1984 Wahl zum Mitglied des Zentralinstituts für Mozartforschung in Salzburg. Zahlreiche Publikationen, vor allem zur Musikgeschichte des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts, insbesondere zur historischen Aufführungspraxis, zur Geschichte der Oper und der Instrumentalmusik sowie zur musikalischen Sozialgeschichte. Mitarbeiter an der Neuen Mozart-Ausgabe. Von 1987 bis 1992 Präsident der International Musicological Society und von 1997 bis 2001 Präsident der Gesellschaft für Musikforschung. Christoph-Hellmut Mahling verstarb am 13. Februar 2012.
