Auf einer Englandreise trifft der deutsche Arzt Robert in der Irrenanstalt von St. James auf den angeblich verruckten Mr. Sidney, einen geheimnisvollen Mann, der eine starke Faszination auf ihn ausubt. Robert gewinnt das Vertrauen Sidneys, eines reichen Lords, der in der Anstalt unter falschem Namen lebt und von seinem bosartigen Bruder Mortimer um sein Erbe gebracht werden soll. Um dem von ihm bewunderten Mann zu helfen, unternimmt Robert eine abenteuerliche Reise durch England, die nicht allein dem Ziel dient, den widerrechtlich Eingesperrten aus den Fangen seiner Feinde zu befreien, sondern die auch der Suche Ellinors gilt, der wunderschonen Gattin des Lords, von der dieser am Tage seiner Hochzeit gewaltsam getrennt worden ist, und von deren Verbleib niemand mehr etwas weiss."

About the Author :
Philipp Galen, eigentlich Karl Ernst Philipp Lange, wurde am 21. Dezember 1813 in Potsdam geboren, wo er am 18. Februar 1899 auch verstarb. Galen studierte Medizin und fand mit 22 Jahren Aufnahme in das Friedrich-Wilhelm-Institut fur Psychatrie. Als Unterarzt empfing er hier wichtige Anregungen zu seinem ersten Roman Der Irre von St. James. 1845 wurde Galen Militararzt und lebte seit 1847 in Bielefeld. 1857 wurde er als Stabsarzt in seine Geburtsstadt Potsdam versetzt und ging dort 1878 als Oberstabs-arzt in den Ruhestand. Da die Besoldung als Militararzt karglich war, unternahm Galen fruhzeitig den Versuch, die Familieneinkunfte durch seine literarische Tatigkeit aufzubessern und hatte damit aufgrund seiner schriftstellerischen Begabung auch Erfolg. Galen schrieb insgesamt 32 Romane, ein Theaterstuck und mehrere Humoresken und galt als einer der spannendsten Erzahler seiner Zeit. Sein Werk, das stark unter dem Einfluss der Romane von Eugene Sue, Wilkie Collins und Alexandre Dumas steht, fugte dem deutschen Gesellschaftsroman die Note des Sensationellen hinzu. Von seinen zahlreichen Romanen wird hier sein wohl beruhmtester, der fruhe deutsche Kriminalroman "Der Irre von St. James" aus dem Jahr 1854 neu vorgelegt."
