About the Author :
Roy Eales, British journalist and writer, was born in July 1940 in Bayswater, London, and grew up there. He now shares his time writing between London and Brittany. He studied literature and journalism at the University of Maryland where he been granted a foreign-student scholarship. In 1964, he won the university's Calvert Review literary prize for prose writing. While a student, he also wrote poetry and satirical writing for the stage as co-author and performer in the satirical review Mad(e) in England. He graduated with a degree in 1966. In that year, he became a professional journalist as a Washington correspondent writing on politics in the US Congress and White House. His journalistic career has included ten years on the writing staff of The Economist of London, New York and Paris correspondent, deputy bureau chief in London for McGraw-Hill World News, bureau chief in Canada for BusinessWeek, and as a columnist for The Independent newspaper of London. He has also been a contributor to many other publications and the BBC. In 1991, he became an independent correspondent in France writing for The Economist, The Independent of London, McGraw-Hill news outlets and for other publications. His work now is devoted to poetry and other writing in Brittany, a magical place where, he says, the worst takes longer to arriveA". It is, he says, chaos in the air, wild fertility in the soil and a clasp of people, land and sea.A" In 2004 the French state awarded him Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. His friend for many years, Sascha Juritz, the Slav artist, sculptor and founder-publisher of Pawel Pan Presse, commissioned Roy Eales's first collection of poetry, published in 1997 -- Lines on the Breton Edge -- (Pawel Pan Presse - Blackbird Editions), translated simultaneously into Breton, French and German, with original drawings in the black ink of Sascha. His second poetry collection, published in 2001 -- You can't change the way the rain appears... ((Blackbird Editions - Pawel Pan Presse), translated from his original English simultaneously into Breton and French, includes original drawings of Susan Eales, artist and wife of the author. His third collection -- What matters most is what you make, ((Blackbird Editions - Pawel Pan Presse, 2004), translated simultaneously into Breton, French and German, includes original drawings in black ink by Sascha Juritz. The author dedicated this book to Sascha who died in June 2003. His latest book of prose and poems On a Road to No End (Blackbird-Pawel Editions) is now published and available. It is also translated simultaneously into Breton, French and German, and inludes 11 black ink drawings by Susan Eales. Also in preparation is a CD of his poems in five languages read by poets to music composed by musicians in Brittany and Wales: (voices) Roy Eales (in English); Bernez Tangi, Fanch Peru (in Breton), Nanda Troadeg(in French)and Marianna Butenschoen (in German); with diverse music and song created by : Jean-Michel Veillon, KEJ (Jean-Luc Thomas, Pierrick Tardivel and Philippe Gloaguen), Marthe Vassallo, Yannig Jory, Emmanuelle Huteau, Julie Murphy, Owen Martell, Tomas Williams.
