Religion und moderne Lyrik besitzen gemeinsame Wurzeln, sie kommen aus demselben Haus und sind unter dem gleichen Horizont grossgeworden, doch ist es zu einer Entfremdung gekommen. Johann Hinrich Claussen hat achtzig Gedichte aus dem 20. Jahrhundert ausgewahlt und sie biblischen Texten, vor allem Psalmen, gegenubergestellt. Was er mit diesen Gegenuberstellungen anstrebt, ist eine Wiederbegegnung von Religion und moderner Lyrik. Gleichberechtigt stehen sie sich gegenuber, haben ihren eigenen Ton, ihre eigene Aussage. Aber etwas ist da, das sie auf ihren Gegentext beziehbar macht: ein Motiv, eine Stimmung, eine Frage, eine Geschichte. So entstehen Spiegelungen.. Es wurden Gedichte ausgewahlt von Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Les Murray, Pablo Neruda, Margaret Atwood, Philip Larkin, Michael Kruger, Joseph Brodsky, Nelly Sachs, Zbigniew Herbert, Paul Celan, Czeslaw Milosz, Lars Gustafsson, Philippe Jaccottet, Robert Gernhardt, Gunter Eich, William Carlos Williams, Octavio Paz, Rene Char, Cees Nooteboom, Gottfried Benn und Ingeborg Bachmann u.a.. Die Lyrik des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts ist dort, wo sie sich mit dem Wesentlichen befasst, nichts anderes als ein Zusammentragen von Daten uber die letzten Dinge im menschlichen Dasein, und dabei hat sie ihre eigene Sprache ausgebildet, die auch von den Theologen benutzt werden konnte - oder eben nicht.
