Le présent volume apporte un nouvel éclairage sur les conceptions du christianisme ancien dans les domaines de l'«Etat» et de l'Eglise, grâce à un florilège de textes, brièvement commentés, qui eurent une influence prépondérante dans ce débat (textes latins, grecs, sources hébraïques, ainsi que leur traduction française). Il s'agit là de passages tirés de la Bible (Ancien et Nouveau Testament), du judaïsme ancien, de l'antiquité grecque (Platon, Aristote, Isocrate), de la philosophie hellénistique (Plutarque) et romaine (Cicéron). Il est vrai que le concept d'«Etat» ne remonte qu'au début de l'époque moderne; pourtant, le titre choisi pour ce recueil semble actuellement le plus apte à rendre compte de sa problématique. On trouvera des textes concernant la royauté dans l'Ancien Testament, le point de vue du judaïsme ancien sur le pouvoir politique, la théorie politique de l'antiquité grecque classique et de l'hellénisme, la conception de l'Etat chez Cicéron, la prière pour les autorités dans le christianisme des origines, ainsi que son arrière-fond théologique, l'Eglise et César, de Tertullien à Jean Chrysostome, les deux civitates chez Augustin, la doctrine gélasienne du «double pouvoir» et ses analogies byzantines (jusqu'à Photius, IXe siècle, et sa conception des rapports entre l'empereur et le patriarche de Byzance).

About the Author :
L'auteur: Né en 1933, Adolf Martin Ritter a étudié la théologie protestante à Marburg, Heidelberg, Göttingen et Athènes. Il fut ordonné au ministère pastoral dans l'Evangelische Landeskirche de Kurhessen-Waldeck. Doctorat en théologie à Heidelberg, habilitation en Histoire de l'Eglise à Göttingen; privat-docent et professeur à Göttingen également. De 1978 à 1981, il fut professeur d'Histoire de l'Eglise à Marburg; dès 1981, professeur ordinaire de Théologie historique (patristique) à Heidelberg; professeur honoraire dès mars 1993. De 1983 à 1991, il a présidé l'Association internationale des études patristiques; il préside depuis 1996 la Patristische Kommission der Deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften. Dr h. c. de Klausenburg (Cluj-Napoca), Roumanie, en 2000; Dr h. c. de Grosswardein (Oradea), Roumanie, en 2002.
