Les recherches sur la lecture qui se sont développées ces dernières années montrent que l'entrée dans l'écrit n'est pas réductible à l'acquisition d'une technique, ni même à la mise en oeuvre de processus cognitifs. La conquête de la lecture autonome s'enracine dans tout un corps de pratiques antérieures, déterminantes aussi bien pour la compréhension des textes que pour le rapport qui s'établit entre l'enfant et le livre. Les rituels langagiers qui s'engagent entre l'adulte et l'enfant, à partir de l'écrit, avant l'âge de la «grande école», permettent en effet à l'enfant de s'approprier progressivement les modèles de la textualité écrite. L'ouvrage propose une étude des principales caractéristiques des textes lus aux enfants et explicite les différentes «manières de faire» utilisées par les adultes pour lire, raconter et adapter ces textes aux capacités discursives de ceux à qui ils s'adressent. Ce qui est en jeu alors, c'est l'accès de l'enfant à une compétence textuelle qui peut donner sens aux premiers apprentissages de la lecture. Les réponses de plus de deux cents enseignants, dans quatre départements français, ont été analysées et complétées par une série d'entretiens. Les résultats fournissent des éléments pour la réflexion didactique et pour une politique de la lecture au niveau de l'école maternelle.

L'auteur: Francis Grossmann, agrégé des lettres modernes, docteur en sciences du langage, est maître de conférences en linguistique et didactique du français à l'Université Stendhal de Grenoble. Membre de l'équipe de recherche IVEL (Interactions Verbales Ecriture Lecture), ses travaux portent sur la sémantique des discours, le développement des compétences de lecture et l'acculturation à l'écrit.
