Zu den Eigentümlichkeiten des Werkes Walter Benjamins gehört es, daß es sich wie kein zweites zur Projektion der Anliegen seiner Interpreten eignet. Schon früh sind einzelne Texte kanonisiert und ihr Autor bald als revolutionärer Marxist oder als tiefsinniger Metaphysiker, bald als surrealistischer Experimentator oder als Wahrer jüdischer Tradition, neuerdings als Theoretiker der Neuen Medien oder als Dekonstruktivist avant la lettre in Anspruch genommen worden. Nur allzu häufig ging mit der Vereinnahmung Benjamins die Einsicht verloren, daß er seine Fragestellungen den intellektuellen Diskursen der Weimarer Republik verdankt. Ohne damit einer strikten Historisierung das Wort reden zu wollen, scheint dennoch die Stunde einer unaufgeregten Bestandsaufnahme gekommen zu sein. Seit jeher hat das Verhältnis von Ästhetik und Geschichtsphilosophie im Brennpunkt des Interesses gestanden. Die in dem vorliegenden Band gesammelten Aufsätze greifen das zentrale Thema erneut auf und fragen nach der Aktualität eines Denkens, das ehedem Gegenstand nicht zuletzt politisch-ideologischer Kontroversen war. Der Band enthält Beiträge in deutscher und französischer Sprache. Il est peu d'oeuvres qui se prêtent aussi bien que celle de Walter Benjamin à la projection des intérêts de leurs interprètes. Certains de ses textes ont été canonisés très tôt et, au gré des interprétations, Benjamin a été tantôt un marxiste révolutionnaire, tantôt un métaphysicien, un adepte du surréalisme ou encore le gardien de la tradition juive. Plus récemment il est devenu le théoricien des nouveaux médias et l'on n'a pas même hésité à en faire un déconstructiviste avant la lettre. Ces récupérations ont pour point commun d'occulter un ressort essentiel de sa réflexion: son appartenance aux discours intellectuels de la République de Weimar. Sans pour autant l'y confiner, il est temps de la réinscrire dans son contexte historique et, à partir de là, d'en dresser un bilan dégagé des engouements des modes et des polémiques idéologico-politiques. C'est dans cet esprit que les essais de ce volume reprennent à nouveaux frais la question des rapports entre esthétique et philosophie de l'histoire et qu'ils s'interrogent sur l'actualité de cet enjeu central de toute l'oeuvre benjaminienne. L'ouvrage rassemble des contributions en allemand et en français.

Die Herausgeber: Gérard Raulet ist Germanist und Philosoph, Professor an der Ecole Normale Supérieure (Fontenay/Saint-Cloud) und Leiter der Groupe de recherche sur la culture de Weimar an der Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris. Uwe Steiner ist Germanist, Wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Fachbereich Germanistik der Freien Universität Berlin, derzeit Habilitation im Fach Deutsche Philologie.
