Als der englische Psychoanalytiker Elliott Jaques 1965 den Begriff der 'Midlife-crisis' prägte, versuchte die Entwicklungspsychologie durch eine Vielzahl von Untersuchungen, dem Symptomenkomplex jener viel beschriebenen Krise der Lebensmitte mit einer Fülle an Datenmaterial Kontur zu verleihen. Dieses Buch sichtet diese Ergebnisse und zeigt, wie Literatur über die symbolische Ordnung der Sprache das entwicklungspsychologische Phänomen des "Mittagsdämons" beschreibbar macht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die literarische Darstellung kein bloßer Abbildungsreflex eines vorgegebenen anthropologischen Geschehens ist, sondern ein Medium, welches - ebenso wie medizinisches Traktat und theologische Abhandlung - über die Grenzen des Textes hinaus Bewältigungsstrategien für die diagnostizierte Krise zu geben sucht. Viele entwicklungspsychologische Studien weisen die Lebensmitte als den am stärksten von der Angst vor dem Tod bestimmten Abschnitt aus. Der Mensch als 'das einzige Wesen in der Welt, das weiß, das es sterben muß' (T. Macho) muß angesichts dieses Wissens Techniken entwickeln, die eben diese Erkenntnis erträglich machen. So schlägt Natur in Kultur um, wird das Wissen um unsere Sterblichkeit zu einem Kultur-Generator ersten Ranges und die Literatur eine wesentliche Quelle der Strategienentwicklung. Das Buch zeigt anhand ausgewählter Textbeispiele aus dem 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. bis hin zur Gegenwart, welche psycho-literarische Bewältigungsstrategien im Kampf gegen den Mittagsdämon von den großen Seelenkennern des frühen Mönchtums bis hin zu den Diesseitskonzepten postmoderner Autoren in Darstellung und Therapieversuch der Krise der Lebensmitte ins Feld geführt werden. Die Schriften von Evagrius Ponticus, Johannes Tauler, Justinus Kerner, Robert Musil, Ingeborg Bachmann und Durs Grünbein stehen dabei im Zentrum der Untersuchung. An ihnen lässt sich exemplarisch zeigen, wie die Literatur der Krise der Lebensmitte als dem 'Problem ohne Namen' (Betty Friedan) eben einen solchen gibt, wie sie den Mittagsdämon 'anspricht' und konturiert.
