About the Book

Bregenz – Friedrichshafen – Konstanz – Lindau - Schaffhausen - Singen What we call Lake Constance today was the work of the Ice Age glaciers. The Rhine glacier, in particular, rolled over the pre-formed basin several times and dug it to its current depth. The preparatory work for Lake Constance reached its climax about 200,000 years ago during the longest cold period, the cracking ice age. The result is quite impressive: Lake Constance, which is up to 252 meters deep, with its 540 square kilometers is the third largest lake in Central Europe after the Hungarian Lake Balaton (590 square kilometers) and Lake Geneva (582 square kilometers). The “Swabian Sea”, as Lake Constance is also known, is in no way inferior to the latter in terms of internationality, as it brings together three countries on its shores. Today, as then, the water masses of the lake affect the climate of the entire region like a heat store and, in addition to fruit, vegetable and viticulture with some exotic fruits, also promote tourism. Like the French (Lac de Constance) and Italian (Lago di Costanza), the English term “Lake of Constance” indicates the secret capital of the body of water: Constance. The Romans took a completely different approach to naming the lake after a town with Celtic roots: Lacus Brigantinus stands for Lake Bregenz, named after the capital of the Austrian province of Vorarlberg. Friedrichshafen and Lindau are other important cities on Lake Constance. The approximately 260 km long Lake Constance cycle path circles the entire Lake Constance, which consists of Obersee (incl. Überlinger See) and Untersee (consisting of Zeller See, Gnadensee, Markelfinger Winkel and Rheinsee). You can shorten the overseas section by taking the Konstanz – Meersburg ferry. Many additional ship connections allow you to customize your trip around Lake Constance. The Rhine Cycle Path takes you from the Rhine delta along the southern shore of Lake Constance and further along the High Rhine in the direction of Basel. Numerous long-distance cycle paths in Baden-Württemberg lead north from Lake Constance, such as the Danube-Lake Constance path, the Heidelberg-Black Forest-Lake Constance path, the Hohenzollern cycle path and the Swabian Alb cycle path. Special attention should also be drawn to the national and regional cycle path network in “Veloland” Switzerland. You can shorten the overseas section by taking the Konstanz – Meersburg ferry.
