About the Book

Bergisch Gladbach - Gummersbach - Keulen - Siegtal - Wuppertal Right outside the gates of the Rhenish metropolis of Cologne is the Bergisches Land, which owes its name not to the hilly landscape but to the former sovereigns, the Counts and later Dukes of Berg. It extends in the north to the Ruhr and in the south to the Sieg Valley, in the west to the Rhine and in the east to the Sauerland. Explore the varied low mountain range landscape on the very well developed and signposted network of cycle paths with the gently rolling hills, the tranquil valleys, the green forests and meadows, the dams and the typical Bergisch towns and cities by bike! “Natural tourism” – this was the motto under which the Bergisches Land nature park was founded in 1973. On around 2,000 square kilometers between the Cologne-Siegburg Bay and the foothills of the Sauerland, the nature park offers an active recreation area, but always in connection with the protection of the animal and plant world. One of the longest rivers in the Bergisches Land is the Wupper, at almost 117 kilometers in length, which, along with 37 other springs, has its source as the Wipper in the town of Börlinghausen near Marienheide. It flows through numerous towns and communities such as e.g. Marienheide, Wippenfürth and Hückeswagen, as well as the three Bergisch cities of Wuppertal, Remscheid and Solingen, which are also known as the "Bergisch Three". Wuppertal, the "big city in the countryside" is located south of the Ruhr area and is best known for its suspension railway. Since the beginning of the 13th century there has been evidence of blade craftsmanship in Solingen, which gave the city the nickname "Blade City". It is the second largest city of the "Bergische Drei" and is one of the oldest industrial and commercial cities in Germany. Of the four districts of Remscheid, the district of Lennep with its cloth museum and the monastery church is recommended for a visit. Historic old towns with the half-timbered houses and slate buildings that are characteristic of this region still convey the real Bergisch charm. In addition to an attractive landscape, numerous dams and idyllic villages, traces of early industrialization can also be found here again and again. Mills and hammers shaped the landscape, which can not only be admired today in the form of natural remains, but also in the Bergisch Gladbach Industrial Museum. The Counts of Berg, on the other hand, left traces of a completely different kind, who not only gave their name to this landscape, but also had numerous castles and palaces built here. Highlights along the Sieg cycle path are Merten Castle, which is well worth seeing, and a detour to the medieval town of Blankenburg. The only metropolis on the Rhine is Cologne, with its landmark, the Cologne Cathedral. The long-distance and regional cycle paths shown on the map through the Bergisches Land and through the Sauerland can be individually combined and offer relaxing and varied cycling fun. The region between Cologne, Düsseldorf and the Ruhr area, for example, can be easily explored without major climbs on river and railway cycle paths. The Bergisches Panorama-Radweg is just one example, which takes you over 130 kilometers from the Ruhr through the Bergisches Land to the Sauerland. The Sieg cycle path is very well developed and recommended, especially from the train station in Rosbach. Due to the many river meanders in this area, this is one of the most beautiful sections along the Siegtal. From here you can ideally cycle directly along the river towards the mouth of the Rhine past the towns of Hennef and Siegburg. There you will meet the Rhine Cycle Path, which is included in our map between the northern parts of Bonn and Monheim. In addition to many other listed routes, this map also contains the junction network of the RadRegionRheinland. Cycle paths and routes with information about surface and traffic density. Selected street names. Precise gradient and distance information. Selection of the most important tourist information. Waterproof and tear-resistant paper. Thoroughly researched and permanently updated. With the cartographic route information you can start your trip confidently, because all the necessary information is already compiled for you: road surface (paved or unpaved), traffic density, hill slopes, distance information tourist infrastructure such as inns and lodging establishments, as well as the cultural and scenic attractions of the region.
