The almost 54,000 hectare Szczecin Lagoon Nature Park is located south of the lagoon on the border with Poland. The landscape is characterized by the natural lagoon coast with the lagoon meadows, a slightly hilly terminal moraine landscape, fen areas and small rivers such as the Uecker and Randow, as well as extensive beech and mixed forests. The Ueckermünde Heath bordering the Szczecin Lagoon is part of the nature park and has poor sandy soil. There are inland dunes and heath areas, but also numerous moors and swamps. The very diverse landscape is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The nature park is an important resting area for bird migration: thousands of geese and cranes can be observed in spring and autumn. Black storks and white-tailed eagles also occur. In addition to Uecker and Randow, the near-natural valleys of Peene, Tollense and Trebel should also be mentioned, which shape the landscape inland. The Peenetal is one of the last natural glacial valleys in Central Europe. It is a magnet and habitat for eagles, red deer, otters, beavers and plants and enjoys special protection thanks to the Peenetal River Landscape Nature Park. One of the cultural highlights is the old Hanseatic city of Greifswald, which has received a city map in the cycling map. The founding of the second oldest university in the Baltic Sea region fell during the period of economic boom with the connection to the Hanseatic League, which is how Greifswald achieved the position of being the intellectual and cultural center of Pomerania. The emergence of the Peene shipyard after the Second World War and the port have brought Wolgast a successful branch of industry to this day. Today, the ducal town of Wolgast is a lively small town with maritime flair. In 1824 the first seaside resort was opened in Swinemünde, Heringsdorf, Zinnowitz and Ahlbeck followed a little later. Nothing stood in the way of the further development of tourism. In Torgelow you can visit the medieval center or take a break at the Uecker. From the port of Ueckermünde you can take the ferry to Usedom or you can follow the coast of the Szczecin Lagoon and head for inviting bathing resorts such as Mönkebude and the Hanseatic city of Anklam, which is an excellent starting point for Peene tours by canoe, kayak, solar boat or raft and nature tours . The city of Demmin, which is surrounded by water and can also be explored using a city map, is now a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and anglers, as three rivers flow together here and Demmin, with 35 species of wild fish, is considered the city with the most fish in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Between Strelasund along the Greifswalder Bodden to Wolgast, the Baltic Coast Cycle Path takes you mainly on side roads with little traffic, but there are also several kilometers of cobblestone streets underneath. On Usedom, on the other hand, you cycle almost exclusively on wonderful cycle paths along the coast.
