About the Book

Aachen - Düren - Erft - Euskirchen - Hohes Venn - Rur - Zülpicher Börde The North Eifel is located in the southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia between Aachen and the Rhine Valley. In the south it touches Rhineland-Palatinate, while to the west - on the border with Belgium - it is bordered by the Hohes Venn plateau. The North Eifel is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, which merge into the Belgian Ardennes in the west. In the large protected area of ??the Eifel National Park you can experience the fascination of wilderness up close - the different habitats of the untouched nature promise an informative and relaxing stay. The landscape of the High Fens is determined by high and low moors, heaths and forests. The Hohes Venn is included in its full extent in the German-Belgian nature park (Northern Eifel Nature Park and Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park). The high moor with Belgium's highest elevation, the 694 meter high Signal de Botrange, lies between Eupen and Malmedy in the Belgian part of the nature park where the Rur rises. With numerous meanders, the river meanders purposefully through the graceful but also strenuous hills of the Eifel for cyclists. The approximately 105-kilometer-long Erft rises in the district of Holzmülheim in the town of Nettersheim, flows mainly in a northerly direction from the North Eifel and later flows into the Rhine. It is believed that the Erft was navigable in Roman times. However, humans altered the river in the last century by straightening it and canalizing it. Recently, natural alluvial forests have developed again due to the renaturation of the Erft. The Rhineland Nature Park, with its extensive network of paths, also invites you to numerous bike tours in the surrounding area. The Zülpicher Börde, a landscape in the Rhineland on the northern edge of the Eifel, is part of the Rhenish Börden zone. In addition to agricultural use, opencast lignite mining in the 20th century brought about considerable changes in the landscape here. The last large forest area in the Börde is currently falling victim to the Hambach opencast mine. In addition to the old imperial city of Aachen with its many museums and the cathedral, the cities of Stolberg, Kornelimünster and Monschau (with its half-timbered backdrop in the old town) are well worth seeing. There are countless historical treasures such as the castles of Heimbach. Eupen is the seat of government of the German-speaking community in East Belgium and thus the "capital" of the German-speaking minority in Belgium, which has around 72,000 inhabitants. Düren - centrally located at the traffic junction between Cologne and Aachen, on the edge of the Eifel and on the banks of the Rur - offers a number of sights, such as the paper museum. Since the 18th century, arable farming in and around Euskirchen has been declining and commercial economy has gradually come to the fore. Until a few decades ago, this was dominated by the cloth industry. At 127 kilometers, the Vennbahn cycle path is one of the longest railway cycle paths in Europe and offers the opportunity to cross the Eifel from north to south. The RurUfer Cycle Path starts about 20 kilometers north-east of the headwaters of the Rur on the German-Belgian border in Monschau. You will get to know a section of the 172 kilometers in the upper reaches of the Rur and along the Rur lakes. The moated castle route, which links the regions of Bonn, the Rhein-Sieg district, the Rhein-Erft district, the Düren district, the Aachen city region and the Euskirchen district, is very well suited for driving on the northern part of the map. With the help of this map you can cycle along the Erft cycle path from the source to Kerpen. The 265-kilometer-long valley route with sections at Neffelbach, Olef and Urft enable you to explore the northern Eifel valleys in a way that saves you energy. In addition, a network of junctions in Belgium, the Netherlands and the RadRegionRheinland provides additional orientation. Cycle paths and routes with information about surface and traffic density. Selected street names. Precise gradient and distance information. Selection of the most important tourist information. Waterproof and tear-resistant paper. Thoroughly researched and permanently updated. With the cartographic route information you can start your trip confidently, because all the necessary information is already compiled for you: road surface (paved or unpaved), traffic density, hill slopes, distance information tourist infrastructure such as inns and lodging establishments, as well as the cultural and scenic attractions of the region.
