In Deutschland wurde die Philosophin und Schriftstellerin Susan Taubes (geb. Feldmann, 1928 1969) erst Mitte der 90er Jahre durch die späte Übersetzung ihres 1969 in den USA erschienenen Romans Divorcing und als erste Frau des Religionsphilosophen Jacob Taubes bekannt. Die Edition ihres Nachlasses ermöglicht nun die Entdeckung einer unabhängigen Denkerin, deren faszinierendes Werk Schriften zu Literatur und Theater, Religionsphilosophie und Kulturwissenschaft umfasst. Die 141 in ihren Originalsprachen Englisch und Deutsch abgedruckten Briefe aus dem Jahr 1952 sind die Fortsetzung der in Bd. 1,1 vorgelegten Korrespondenz zwischen dem Ehepaar Susan und Jacob Taubes der Jahre 1950 und 1951. 1952 leben die Philosophiestudentin und der Religionsphilosoph räumlich voneinander getrennt: Susan verbringt ein Studiensemester an der Pariser Sorbonne, während Jacob an der Jerusalemer Hebrew University lehrt. Geht es im ersten Band um die kulturellen und intellektuellen Szenen in New York und Jerusalem, erzählen die in Band 1,2 versammelten Briefe von der intellektuellen und künstlerischen Avantgarde in Paris. Sie berichten von persönlichen Begegnungen u. a. mit Emmanuel Lévinas, Hannah Arendt, Albert Camus und Marc Chagall. Zugleich zeugen sie von einer Radikalisierung der Auseinandersetzungen zwischen dem Ehepaar. Dreh- und Angelpunkt ist ihr je unterschiedliches Verhältnis zum Judentum sowie zur Verbindung von Religion und Politik. Schauplatz ist der gerade gegründete Staat Israel. Zudem kündigt sich ein Schwerpunktwechsel in Susan Taubes' Denken an: Ihr frühes Interesse an der Frage nach theologischen Elementen in Heideggers Denken wird zunehmend von einer Faszination für die Philosophin und Mystikerin Simone Weil abgelöst, über die sie später in Harvard ihre Dissertation schreiben wird. Die Briefe dokumentieren, wie das persönliche und intellektuelle Profil der 24-Jährigen gerade auch in Abgrenzung von den Positionen ihres Ehemanns an Kontur gewinnt, und zeugen von einer weiteren Station in der intellektuellen Laufbahn der Religionsphilosophin Susan Taubes. Der Band setzt die mehrbändige Edition der Schriften von Susan Taubes fort. Diese umfasst ihre wissenschaftlichen und literarischen Texte sowie Briefe und andere Dokumente aus dem Nachlass. Nur wenige dieser Texte wurden bereits zu Lebzeiten veröffentlicht, ein Großteil wird hier erstmals kommentiert vorgelegt.
