Bernd Neumanns Essay behandelt Franz Kafkas drei große Romane. Methodisch steht er Stephen Greenblatts "New Historicism" nahe. Was meint: Der Romanschreiber Kafka wird als Teilnehmer jeweils der dominierenden Diskurse seiner Zeit ernst genommen - und mithin im Kern seiner geistig-sozialen Existenz. Neumann setzt dabei auf eine möglichst eingehende Rekonstruktion der Teilnahme Kafkas an Dynamik des zeitgenössischen Diskurses, der wiederum durch Namen wie Max Brod, Martin Buber, Hans Gross, Hans Blüher, Artur Holitscher, Robert Klopstock, Anton Kuh, Gershon Wolf u.v.a. gekennzeichnet ist. Die Romane werden als eine literarische Codierung des mit aller Leidenschaftlichkeit geführten Assimilationsdiskurses aus Kafkas Tagen verständlich, eines Diskurses, der gewiss keinen anderen Autor so fieberhaft beschäftigt hat, wie gerade Franz Kafka. Insgesamt gilt in diesem Zusammenhang Friedrich Schlegels Wort: "Offenbar gehören nicht selten alle Romane eines Autors zusammen, und sind gewissermaßen nur ein Roman." Mit Blick auf diese Entwicklungsreihe seiner Romane wird Kafka als eine Art Existentialist der Assimilation konturiert. Aber auch, was es mit dem Kurzschwert der Freiheitsstatue auf sich hat, kann der interessierte Kafka-Leser in diesem Buch erfahren, und auch, wie es um jenes "amerikanische" Scheinwerfer-Licht bestellt ist, das im "Verschollenen" die Wahl des amerikanischen Richters schmerzhaft grell ausleuchtet. Ferner, dass solches lumen profanum in genauem Gegensatz zu jenem "göttlich" geheißenen Licht steht, das dann im Proceß aus dem "Gesetz" brechen und die Pläne zum Bau der Chinesischen Mauer als einer Abwehrmaßnahme gegen die Barbarenvölker überstrahlen wird. Und schließlich, was hinter dem Faszinations-Moment jenes ganz besonders herrschaftlichen (und deshalb auf besondere Weise leuchtenden) Blicks steht, der im Schloß K.`s Gegenspieler Klamm auszeichnet. Ein Blick zudem, in dessen Glanz sich die "kosmische Abhängigkeit des Weibes" (Hans Blüher) entfalten sollte (und den später Michel Foucault als das eher kalte Sigel auf dem wissenschaftlichen Geist der Neuzeit hat wahrnehmen können).
