Die Freie Hansestadt Hamburg steht vor einem weiteren tiefen Einschnitt in seiner Stadtentwicklungsgeschichte. Mit der Uberbauung von 155 Hektar nicht mehr benotigter Hafenflache nimmt sie das grosste innerstadtische Bauprojekt seit mehr als 100 Jahren in Angriff. Die geplante HafenCity, die in ihrer Ausdehnung unmittelbar an die Speicherstadt grenzt, wird die Flache der Hamburger Kernstadt verdoppeln eine Grossenordnung, die das funktionale Gleichgewicht der gesamten Stadt beruhrt. Wurde die hanseatische Stadtentwicklung in der Vergangenheit von ihrer naturlichen Ausdehnung an der Peripherie gepragt, wird dieses Wachstum nun in die Innenstadt zuruckgelenkt. Hier liegt die Herausforderung fur Stadtplaner und Architekten, die Inszenierung einer Idealstadt des 21. Jahrhunderts, die Wohnen, Arbeiten und Freizeit in einem Quartier auf das Engste verknupft, zu einem attraktiven und funktionierendem Gesamtbild vereint und aus der alten Stadt herauswachsen lasst. Das Gelande der HafenCity verfugt mit seiner unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft zur Speicherstadt, dem Hafen und der Hamburger City nicht nur uber einen imposanten Rahmen, sondern auch uber eine Historie, wie sie hamburgischer kaum sein konnte, denn die Geschichte berichtet, dass auf dem Areal des Grasbrook, der zukunftigen HafenCity, bereits am 20. Oktober 1401 der Seerauber Klaus Stortebeker und seine Bande hingerichtet wurden. Wieder einmal also soll an diesem Ort Hamburger Geschichte geschrieben werden.
