Das Jahr des Herrn 1349. Im Kloster Knechtsteden scheint Ruhe einzukehren, seit der skrupellose Vogt Heinrich verbannt wurde. Doch der Schein trügt. Der Erzbischof setzt Ruprecht von Ebersberg ein, besonnen, gerecht, doch mit eigenem Kompass. An seiner Seite: Gerlach, erfahrener Ermittler, vertraut mit den dunklen Intrigen der Kirche. Aus anfänglichem Misstrauen wächst eine geheime Verbrüderung. Der Abt indes, gedemütigt über den Verlust Heinrichs, gibt sich nicht geschlagen. Hinter einer Maske der Frömmigkeit greift er nach den Schätzen des Klosters, Reliquien, Münzen, Kelche. Er rechtfertigt es als "verdienten Anteil", in Wahrheit treiben ihn Gier und verletzter Stolz. Da erschüttert ein Mord das Kloster: Ein Mönch liegt erschlagen im Kreuzgang. Kurz darauf stirbt ein Diener des Abts, die Kehle durchtrennt. Furcht und Misstrauen vergiften die Gemeinschaft. Die Spuren weisen eindeutig auf den Abt. Zu eindeutig. Drohungen, gefundene Beweise, alte Konflikte, alles spricht gegen ihn. Gerlach ist überzeugt, den Täter zu haben, Ruprecht zögert. Doch die Indizienkette wird so dicht, dass eine Anklage unvermeidlich scheint. Kurz vor dem Urteil erkennt Gerlach den Trug: Die Beweise sind zu glatt, zu sauber. Jemand hat den Abt nicht nur verraten, sondern ihm die Morde bewusst zugeschoben. Die Spur führt zu Bruder Anselm, jung, blass, unscheinbar, von allen übersehen. Anselm gesteht: Er hasst die Kirche, die ihn seit Kindertagen missbrauchte und fesselte. Kalt erklärt er, die Morde seien sein Werk, inszeniert, um die Heuchelei der Brüder bloßzustellen. Doch während der wahre Mörder gefasst ist, offenbaren sich die dunklen Machenschaften des Abts: geplünderte Kammern, veruntreute Schätze, gefälschte Listen. Ein Skandal droht. Noch bevor Ruprecht ihn verhaften kann, flieht der Abt, beladen mit Gold, in die Nacht. Zurück bleibt ein Kloster in Trümmern: ein Mörder in Ketten, ein Abt auf der Flucht, ein Orden am Abgrund.
