Dies ist die erste fundierte Darstellung der Geschichte der DLRG von 1925-1945. Von der dramatischen wirtschaftlichen Situation der DLRG 1925 über die wachsenden Erfolge der Folgejahre bis hin zur DLRG im Nationalsozialismus und ihrem Verbot durch die Alliierten werden die wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse in gut verständlicher Weise dargestellt. Teil 1 beleuchtet die zeitliche Entwicklung der DLRG in diesen Jahren: Versammlungen und Entscheidungen, Veränderungen in Führungsstrukturen und Satzung, Aufbau der Ausbildung und Organisation des Wasserrettungsdienstes - immer aus der Perspektive der DLRG-Zentrale in Berlin und im Wechselspiel mit ihren Landesgliederungen in den Regionen. Teil 2 nähert sich den Menschen, die die DLRG damals wieder neu organisierten, die dem Gedanken der Lebensrettung erneute Geltung verschafften und die - individuell unterschiedlich - die verhängnisvolle Entwicklung nach 1933 (mit-) trugen. Aus Idealisten, die sich 1925 eine demokratische Satzung gaben und ihr Leben der Lebensrettung widmeten, wurden innerhalb weniger Jahre vielfach überzeugte Anhänger der NS-Ideologie - oder ihr Opfer. Teil 3 stellt wichtige Aspekte der DLRG-Arbeit vertiefend dar. Dies sind die (tägliche) Arbeit der Gesellschaft betreffende Themen der damaligen DLRG wie: Ausbildung/Prüfungen, Wasserrettungsdienst, Medizin/Ärzte, Satzung, Finanzierung, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Embleme, Lehrscheine und die Landesverbände in jener Zeit. Daneben wird auf die Situation der jüdischen Mitglieder eingegangen. Den Frauen in der DLRG und der Jugend wird ein eigenes Kapitel gewidmet. Weitere Themen: Olympische Spiele 1936, Reichsschwimmwoche, uniformierte Lebensretter, Sprache.
