About the Book

In recent years neuroscience has entered a new era by combining the different approaches of molecular biology, electrophysiology, morphology and in particular gene targeting together with animal behavioral analysis. This book looks at selected topics on gene targeting and related aspects. These include the mechanisms of hippocampal plasticity responsible for memory and learning, cerebellar function for motor coordination and learning, receptor mechanisms underlying a variety of brain functions and the regulatory mechanisms of transmitter release and developmental neuronal plasticity.

Table of Contents:
Cerebellar function: Genetic dissections of the cerebellar circuitry involved in classical eyeblink conditioning, J.J. Kim et al; Persistent multiple climbing fibre innervation of cerebellar Purkinje cells in PKCy mutant mice, M. Kano; Deficient cerebellar long-term depression and impaired motor learning in GFAP mutant mice, S. Itohara, H. Gomi. Transmitter release: Probing presynaptic mechanisms of synaptic plasticity, Y. Goda; Regulation of synaptic transmission by synapsin I and II, T.W. Rosahl. Glutamate receptors: Functional analysis of the NMDA receptor channel by gene disruption, K. Sakimura; Alteration of FluR5 mRNA editing using gene targeting, A. Sailer et al; RNA editing in inotropic glutamate receptor channels, R. Sprengel et al; Roles of presynaptic mGluR2 metabotropic glutamate receptor in hippocampal synaptic plasticity, M. Yokoi, S. Nakanishi. Other receptors: Genetic analysis of dopamine D2 receptor function in the pituitary and the brain, A. Aiba et al; Analysis of histamine H1 receptor deficient mice - role in locomotor activity and anaphylaxis, I. Inoue et al; Molecular analysis of serotonin receptor function, D. Julius. Neural development: Plasticity of the developing visual cortex in normal and mutant mice, J.A. Gordon et al; Otx and Emx genes and rostral head development, I. Matsuo et al; Genetic analysis of synaptic plasticity - development and memory in the mammalian brain, C. Chen, S. Tonegawa; Genetics and learning - misconceptions and criticisms, A.J. Silva; Genetics studies of CaMKII function in the nervous system, M. Mayford. (Part contents).
