About the Book

The rising incidence of atopic and allergic diseases in recent years has intensified efforts to understand the underlying biological mechanisms. This volume presents the results of recent research into the eosinophils and their role in the pathophysiology of these disorders. The topics discussed include eosinophil growth factors, including RANTES, adhesion molecules of both eosinophils and constitutive cells of the target organs, intracellular signal transduction, surface materials and biologically active substance from eosinophils. The book also features studies of specific relevance to bronchial asthma, chronic eosinophilic pneumonia and idiopathic pulmonary eosinophilia.

Table of Contents:
Preface, S. Makino and T. Ishikawa; analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage cells in chronic eosinophilic pneumonia before and during corticosteroid therapy, H. Takahashi et al; surface antigens on eosinophils in bronchial asthma and eosinophilic pneumonia, S. Sakamota et al; effect of RANTES on eosinophil adhesion to plates coated with recombinant soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and expression of beta2-integrin adhesion molecules on eosinophils, T. Kakazu et al; induction of eosinophil cytokine generation by chemoattractants, M. Miyamasu et al; serum concentrations of interleukin-5 and the production of lymphocytes in reactive eosinophilia, T. Koike et al; role of platelet-activating factor in the release of neutrophil and eosinophil chemotactic attractants from cultured guinea-pig tracheal epithelial cells, M. Arima et al; chemotactic heterogeneity of eosinophils in idiopathic pulmonary eosinophilia, N. Saita et al; evaluation of airway hyperreactivity in interleukin-5 transgenic mice, T. Iwamoto and K. Takatsu; inhibitory effect of transforming growth factor beta1 on cytokine-enhanced eosinophil survival and degranulation, J. Atsuta et al; effects of physiologic soluble agonists on leukotriene C4 production and degranulation by human eosinophils, S. Takafuji et al; ultrastructural observation of adherence of eosinophils to their surroundings, K. Watanabe; effect of RANTES on intracellular expression of EG2 antigen in eosinophils, T. Kakazu et al; increased eosinophil oxidative metabolism by treatment with soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1, J. Chihara et al; adhesion to fibronectin augments eosinophil radical oxygen products, I. Higashimoto et al; effect of fibronectin on the production of leukotriene C4 by eusinophils, K. Yoshida et al; possible release of eosinophil granule proteins in response to signalling from intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and its ligands, J. Chihara et al.
