Friedrich Schlegel gilt als der bedeutendste Theoretiker der Frühromantik. An die Stelle des Primats der Vernunft setzt er die freischwebende "Phantasie", an die Stelle der Annahme des reinen, selbstbewußten Seins die des werdenden, unbewußten "Universums". Die Transzendentalphilosophie (1800-1801) bietet den einzigen Versuch Schlegels, seine philosophische Position quasi systematisch darzustellen und gilt zugleich als die Schlüsselschrift zum Selbstbild der deutschen Romantik.

About the Author :
Friedrich Schlegel wird 1772 in Hannover geboren. Nach einem kurzen Intermezzo als Kaufmannslehrling und Jurastudent, geht Schlegel 19-jährig nach Leipzig, um Philosophie, Altphilologie und Kunstgeschichte zu studieren. 1796 zieht er nach Jena, wo sich um ihn und seinen Bruder der erste sog. frühromantische Kreis bildet, zu dem u.a. Novalis, Tieck, Fichte und Schelling gehören und der in der Zeitschrift "Athenäum" sein wichtigstes Ausdrucksorgan findet. Friedrich Schlegel gilt als der bedeutendste Theoretiker der Frühromantik. An die Stelle des Primats der Vernunft setzt er die freischwebende Phantasie, an die Stelle der Annahme des reinen, selbstbewußten Seins die des werdenden, unbewußten Universums. Im Jahre 1801 habilitiert sich Schlegel an der Universität Jena und hält dort ein philosophisches Kolleg. Die Transcendentalphilosophie bietet seinen einzigen Versuch, seine philosophische Position quasi systematisch darzustellen und gilt zugleich als die Schlüsselschrift zum Selbstbild der deutschen Romantik. Nach Auflösung des Romantikerkreises verläßt Schlegel Jena und widmet sich einer ausgedehnten Vorlesungstätigkeit in Köln und später in Wien. Zunächst sehr kritisch eingestellt gegenüber kirchlichen Autoritäten und Institutionen, tritt Schlegel 1808 zum Katholizismus über und vertritt die Meinung, die Vernunft habe sich kirchlichen Wahrheiten zu unterwerfen. Seine letzten Lebensjahre verbringt er im österreichischen Staatsdienst unter Metternich und stirbt schließlich 1829 in Dresden.
