Die sternesche Zitierpraxis agiert auf ebendiesem Felde: Seine Romane zeichnen sich besonders durch ihre vieldeutige Sprache aus, sie sind aufgeladen mit einer Fülle von Anspielungen, die sich nicht endgültig entschlüsseln lassen. Dass Laurence Sterne in seinen Werken unzählige Passagen aus der literarischen Überlieferung zitiert, ist zwar seit Langem bekannt. Werner Busch kann nun aber zeigen, dass Sterne auch zahlreiche Werke der bildenden Kunst aufgreift und seinem Werk radikal einverleibt. Laurence Sterne vermeidet folgerichtiges Erzählen zugunsten zahlloser Abschweifungen und montiert seine Texte aus einer unüberschaubaren Vielzahl von Bausteinen, die er sich aus der gesamten literarischen Überlieferung borgt und nur minimal verändert. Gerade dieses Montageverfahren macht Sternes Modernität aus: James Joyce und Virginia Woolf oder auch Thomas Mann und Arno Schmidt beziehen sich auf ihn als einen Autor der literarischen Moderne. Neben dieser Textmontage zitiert Sterne - vor allem in geradezu absurd ausführlichen Beschreibungen von Gesten und Situationen - zahlreiche Werke der bildenden Kunst. Dabei eignet sich Sterne in seinem Schreiben zumeist Werke aus der Vergangenheit an, bezieht sich aber auch auf die Kunst seiner Zeitgenossen. Werner Busch gelingt es nicht nur nachzuweisen, welche Bilder Sterne auf diese Weise zitiert. Er kann sogar darlegen, woher Sterne diese Bilder gekannt haben wird. Das führt ihn zu der Frage, aus welchem Grund Laurence Sterne Szenen aus Zeichnungen, Gemälden, Radierungen und häufig sogar Karikaturen für seine Texte verwendete.
