Eine grundlegende Neuerschließung von Goyas Werk, die die Poetik der Caprichos in dessen Zentrum rückt. 'Goya - Der letzte Karneval arbeitet als spezifische Figur des Karnevals um 1800 die verkehrte Welt heraus, die ihren Niederschlag in einer Rhetorik der Antiphrase und Inversion finden kann, sich aber zunächst einmal in seiner Anschaulichkeit als Prinzip von Goyas Körperdarstellungen erweist: die komplexe Inszenierung verkehrter Männer und Frauen, Menschen und Tiere, Oben und Unten, Vorne und Hinten wird als das zentrale Imaginäre vorgeführt, das den Moment der Jahrhundertwende prägt. Und damit steht auch die historische Kontextualisierung unter einem besonderen Zeichen: Stoichita und Coderch geht es darum, die geschichtliche Aktualisierung von Bachtins Kategorie des Karnevalesken zu rekonstruieren - als 'symbolische Form', die nach der Auflösung der bestehenden Zeremonie des Karnevals eine umgestürzte Gesellschaft und insofern eine karnevalesk verkehrte Welt und ein entfesseltes Imaginäres zu bewältigen hilft. Die französische Revolution und das Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts stimmen zu einem außerzeremoniellen Karneval überein, der die epochale Dialektik der Aufklärung zu einer momentanen Krise der Vernunft beschleunigt und zuspitzt. Letzteres zeichnet sich besonders in dem Kapitel zum Marquis de Sade ab, dessen Rhetorik der Transgression - mit Hilfe des Pymalion-Mythos - der kunsttheoretischen Engführung von repräsentativer Ordnung und erotisch-zerstörerischer Unordnung vergleichbar wird.
