Die Auslegung der Moderne bleibt ein abgekartetes Spiel, solange sie sich nicht ihrem globalen Komplement zuwendet: der Auslegung dessen, was die Kategorie des sogenannten 'Primitiven' für die Moderne bedeutete. Statt den Primitivismus der Moderne allein als Faktum einer illusionären Aneignung und realen Unterwerfung des außereuropäischen Fremden zu behandeln und imagologisch einzufrieren, gilt es dabei, die Praktiken und Fremderfahrungen der Moderne nachzuzeichnen, die aus der kolonialen Mobilität von Personen, Zeichen und Dingen im ersten großen Globalisierungsschub entstanden waren und in der Entgegensetzung von Modernem und Primitivem verhandelt wurden. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts waren weltweit proportional mehr Menschen unterwegs als heute, und in der Folge entstanden die heute noch erfolgreichsten künstlerischen und musikalischen Synkretismen. Auch der Begriff der Weltliteratur stand zwischen 1870 und 1960 zur Disposition. Was ist aus den weltliterarischen Erwartungen der Moderne geworden, die im Namen des Primitiven formuliert wurden? Aus dem Inhalt: - ﷓Die Ashanti folgen dem Motiv der Kästchenwahl, um sich die schriftliche Überlegenheit der Kolonisatoren zu erklären und sie zu konterkarieren. - ﷓Kabbo diktiert 1873 dem Linguisten Wilhelm Bleek: 'Die Briefe der Buschmänner sind in ihren Körpern.' - ﷓Sam Blowsnake zeichnet 1912 für Paul Radin den Tricksterzyklus der Winnebago auf, und berichtet von seinem Leben in der Wild West Show. - ﷓Europäische Theoretiker glauben an Totem und Tabu. - ﷓Aby Warburg spricht 1923 über den Schlangentanz der Hopi und verläßt das Sanatorium 'Belle-Vue'. - ﷓Marcel Mauss begründet 1925 den Gabentausch aus römischem Recht und germanischer Literatur. - ﷓Gregory Bateson erarbeitet 1943 eine folkloristische Lesart von 'Hitlerjunge Quex', um die Re-Education Deutschlands zu diskutieren. - ﷓1952 rechtfertigt Claude Lévi-Strauss die symbolische Verbrennung eines Weihnachtsmanns. - - ﷓Jean Rouch filmt 1954 bei Accra den Hund, dem das Fell abgezogen wurde, weil er Europa vorstellte: Gaabi cirey!
