Botho Strauß hat den schwäbischen Dichter Konrad Weiß (1880-1940) einen erratischen Brocken der Literatur genannt, dem stets auch nur der aus allgemeiner Leserschaft Abgeirrte begegnen wird. Es wäre denn auch nicht ganz richtig, das Werk dieses Mystiker-Dichters und sprödsprechenden Nachfahren der Böhme, Tauler und Baader (Strauß) als ein vergessenes zu bezeichnen, das es wiederzuentdecken gilt. Es ist nie entdeckt gewesen. Eine Öffentlichkeit, aus deren Blickfeld er hätte verschwinden können, hat sich für den katholischen Einzelgänger nie interessiert. Zwar hat Weiß seine wenigen Bücher stets in namhaften Verlagen veröffentlichen können, ist postum eine vierbändige Gesamtausgabe seines dichterischen Werks erschienen. Doch nur aufnahmebereite, das Schwierige und nicht auf Anhieb Verständliche nicht scheuende Einzelne, zu denen der Dichter Rudolf Borchardt und der Staatsrechtler Carl Schmitt gehörten, haben sich von dem wundersam-dichten, eigen- und einzigartigen Hauch seiner Sprache und seiner Botschaft anwehen lassen. Darauf beruht die untergründige und noch zu rekonstruierende Wirkung des Lyrikers, der zugleich Kunsthistoriker und Landschaftsdeuter, Laientheologe und Geschichtsphilosoph gewesen ist und in den 1920er Jahren zu den führenden Ideologen einer gotischen Erneuerung gehörte. Anders als die Auswahlbände von Friedhelm Kemp (Spuren im Wort, 1951) und Norbert Hummelt (Eines Morgens Schnee, 2005), in denen allein das lyrische Werk Berücksichtigung fand, gibt dieses Lesebuch ein in sechs Werkkreisen sich entfaltendes Bild des Weiß'schen Gesamtwerks, dessen Gehalt und innere Konstruktion zu erschließen zudem das Ziel eines den Werkauszügen folgenden interpretierenden Kommentars ist. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei der Einfluß, den zentrale Motive und Begriffe der Weiß'schen Geschichts- und Weltauffassung, etwa die Immaculataform und das Irdische, das Wort und die Schrift, das Bild, die Zelle und das Epimetheische, auf das Denken von Carl Schm

Konrad Weiß, 1880 in Rauhenbretzingen bei Schwäbisch Hall geboren, 1940 in München gestorben, war ein katholischer Dichter und Kunstkritiker im Umfeld des Konservatismus der Zwischenkriegszeit. Bis 1920 war er Redakteur der katholischen Zeitschrift Hochland, danach Mitarbeiter der Münchner Neuesten Nachrichten. Eine seiner Leitideen war die einer neuen Gotik, zu der er die moderne Kunst unterwegs sah.
