Über den Autor: 1871 als erstes Kind des Lübecker Kaufmanns und späteren Senators Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann und dessen brasilianisch-deutscher Ehefrau Julia da Silva-Bruhns in den hanseatischen Wohlstand der Gründerjahre hineingeboren, verlässt Luiz Heinrich Mann das Gymnasium bereits in der Unterprima und absolviert nach einer rasch wieder abgebrochenen Buchhändlerlehre in Dresden ein Volontariat bei S. Fischer in Berlin. Bis zum Kriegsausbruch unternimmt er - in München lebend - ausgedehnte Reisen nach Italien, oft in Begleitung seines jüngeren Bruders Thomas, mit dem er sich 1914 über dessen deutschnationale Anschauung überwirft. Er emigriert mit seiner zweiten Ehefrau Nelly Kröger 1933 nach Frankreich, nachdem die Nazis ihn zunächst aus der Akademie der Künste aus
