About the Book

The virology section of the "Soviet Medical Reviews" series reflects recent findings by Russian researchers in this field. This volume contains four reviews detailing experimental and clinical studies in internally transmitted hepatitides. The first review describes some characteristics of hepatitis A virus (HAV), when introduced in a susceptible cell culture, including its extended replicative cycle with earlier accumulation of infectious virus and later production of viral antigen. The authors describe the technique of molecular cloning to produce plasmids capable of expressing fragments of HAV structural proteins. Some of these expressed products proved to be capable of inducing antiviral (including virus-neutralizing) antibodies. Review number two details the results of investigations which prove the existence of hepatitis A infection among Old World monkeys. The infection is caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV) of monkeys which is similar to human HAV by its antigenic and other characteristics. The data on hepatitis A of Old World monkeys and its aetiological agent are provided for discussion. The fourth review investigates the production of HAV production in different cell cultures. The authors describe the technique whereby HAV, isolated from faecal extracts of HAV patients, was adapted to the PLC/PRF/5 cell line at 32 and 37 degrees C. The synthesis of viral RNA and particles in PLC/PRF/5 cells was analyzed. The last review describes studies carried out at the Latvian Hepathological Centre which have yielded some novel, modern ideas concerning various aspects of the problems of HAV versus hepatitis B virus. The authors describe the common and distinctive features of these infections as well as the purport of the mechanisms that govern their clinical manifestations, clinical course and outcome.

Table of Contents:
Virus structures and molecular cloning of hepatitis A virus multiplicated in tissue culture, Yu.Kusov and M.Balayan; hepatitis A of Old World monkeys, M.S.Balayan, et al; hepatitis A in cell culture, V.Farashyan, et al; unconventional clinical features and the pathology of viral hepatitis type A versus hepatitis B virus infection, A.Blyuger, et al.
