Die Angst vor einem womöglich überstarken Magier oder gar einer unkontrollierbaren Magie ist größer als ihre ethischen Bedenken. Doch als das Kind schlafend vor ihr liegt, entscheidet Agatha Heimlich anders. Anstatt den Jungen zu töten, verschließt sie den Großteil seiner magischen Energie tief in dem Kind und versiegelt den Zauber mit einem magischen Schlüssel. So ist die mögliche Gefahr, die von dem Kind ausgeht, gebannt. Zehn Jahre später gelangt der Schlüssel in den Besitz von Luna, einem zwölfjährigen, abenteuerlustigen Mädchen. Durch Zufall oder Schicksal, das zu entscheiden bleibt jedem selbst überlassen, kreuzen sich die Wege von Malakai und Luna. Als dieser versucht Luna zu verzaubern und ihre Lebensenergie zu stehlen, geschieht ein Unglück. Der Zauber schließt die beiden in sich ein und sie erwachen erst viele Jahre später, in unserer heutigen Zeit, wieder. Hier steht ihr Leben gründlich Kopf. Nicht nur ist Malakais Zauberkraft auf unerklärliche Weise verschwunden, auch hat Lunas Seele ihren Körper verlassen und hat sich in Malakai eingenistet. So existiert sie für die Außenwelt nicht und kann nur von Malakai, als Stimme in seinem Kopf, verstanden werden. Die beiden werden in dem Internat 'Haus Fichtenruh' untergebracht, welches zunächst einen guten Eindruck auf die beiden macht. Doch dann erfahren sie auf ihren nächtlichen Streifzügen, dass in dem Internat immer wieder Kinder auf geheimnisvolle Weise verschwinden und eine Gruppe finsterer Magier in dem Haus ihr Unwesen treibt.
