Die Humankapitaltheorie besagt, dass das Bildungsniveau einer Bevolkerung den wirtschaftlichen Wohlstand einer Gesellschaft sowie ihr wirtschaftliches Wachstumspotential beschreibt. Bildung versteht sich hier als schulischer, arbeitsbezogener Lernprozess, der als Investition in Konnen und Wissen eines Menschen dessen arbeitskraftbezogene Produktivitat, Leistung und vor dem Hintergrund einfacher Marktmechanismen seinen Arbeitswert und damit verbunden seine Berufs- und Entlohnungsperspektiven steigern kann. Auf der Grundlage dieser Perspektiven soll schlielich eine gesellschaftliche Position bezogen werden. Um diese Annahmen zu untersuchen, soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, inwieweit man sich durch individuelle Leistung in der Gesellschaft positioniert? Die Antwort darauf ist im Kern mit zwei naheliegenden Kritikpunkten an der Humankapitaltheorie verbunden. Zuerst ist die begriffliche Einengung des Humankapitalbegriffs auf eine okonomische, an Profitmaximierung orientierte Sichtweise und eine nahezu perfekt meritokratische Handlungspraxis zu nennen. Daruber hinaus wird bereits vorhandenes Kapital eines Akteurs bei dessen Eintritt in den Leistungskreislauf weitgehend ausgeblendet. Sicherlich kann auf einen Menschen bezogenes Kapital beziehungsweise Humankapital selbsttatig erarbeitet werden und einmal angeeignet, kann es auch Profite erzielen. Bei Pierre Bourdieu kann es sich daruber hinaus jedoch auch akkumulieren, reproduzieren und durch seine Verteilung nicht nur die soziale Welt strukturieren, sondern auch eine subjektive Handlungsgrundlage definieren, auf der man wiederum neues Kapital erarbeitet.
