About the Book

Der dritte Band der Gesammelten Schriften von Hermann Schweppenhäuser enthält im ersten Teil systematische Erörterungen sozialphilosophischer Begriffe, im zweiten Teil Abhandlungen mit philosophiegeschichtlichen Schwerpunkten (vom späten 18. bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts) und im dritten Teil Texte, die im Zusammenhang mit der akademischen philosophischen Lehre stehen. Ergänzt wird der Band durch einen Brief von Theodor W. Adorno aus dem Jahre 1960 und ein Nachwort von Schweppenhäusers langjährigen Kollegen Günther Mensching. Eine „spezifische Verbindung von scharfer Kritik am Üblichen und Konventionellen mit eindringlicher Besinnung auf die Verbindlichkeit vergangener geistiger Zeugnisse kennzeichnet, über die Gründer der Frankfurter Schule weit hinaus, die Denkweise Hermann Schweppenhäusers. Die Komplexität seines Stils macht die Anstrengung spürbar, Kontinuität und radikale Diskontinuität der europäischen Kultur, zumal der deutschen, zusammenzudenken. About the Author :
Hermann Schweppenhäuser (1928–2015) studierte Philosophie, Literatur- und Kunstgeschichte sowie Soziologie an der Universität Frankfurt a.M. und war dort Assistent am Philosophischen Seminar. Von 1962 bis 1996 hatte er den Lehrstuhl für Philosophie an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Lüneburg inne, die 1989 zur Universität Lüneburg wurde. Daneben lehrte Schweppenhäuser seit der zweiten Hälfte der 1960er Jahre Philosophie an der Frankfurter Universität, zunächst als Privatdozent, später als Honorarprofessor. Thomas Friedrich ist Professor für Philosophie und Designtheorie an der Fakultät Gestaltung der Hochschule Mannheim. Sven Kramer ist Professor für Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft und Literarische Kulturen an der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg. Gerhard Schweppenhäuser ist Professor für Design- und Medientheorie an der Hochschule Würzburg und Privatdozent für Philosophie an der Universität Kassel.
