Einstmals stabile Institutionen werden durch unberechenbare Ströme von Informationen, Ideen, Geldern und Menschen ersetzt. Kontinuierlich werden neue digitale Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien entwickelt, die viele Prozesse gleichsam ort- und zeitlos werden lassen. Altbekannte Traditionen und Konventionen verlieren ihre Geltung. Es scheint, als wäre man ständiger Bewegung und Beschleunigung ausgesetzt. Das wirkt sich unverkennbar drastisch auf die Lebensführung von Individuen in unserer westlichen Welt aus. Es scheint unmöglich, das eigene Leben längerfristig zu planen, denn Offenheit und Unbestimmtheit beschlagnahmen die Stelle einstmals fester Entwicklungsbahnen. Für Georg Simmel, einen der Gründerväter der Soziologie, ist dieser Zustand ganz klar ein Symptom des Zerfalls der Kultur. In solch einer komplexen Lebenssituation braucht das Individuum etwas, woran es festhalten kann. Die Religion liefert dafür oftmals einen Rahmen. Doch trotz zunehmender Entindividualisierung scheinen verschiedene Religionsströmungen das Individuum nicht locken zu können. Stattdessen gibt es einen stetigen Zuwachs spiritueller Bewegungen in allen Lebensbereichen, sei es Sport, Wohnen oder Ernährung, zu verzeichnen. Yoga und Feng Shui sind nur zwei Beispiele für die spirituelle Entdeckung der westlichen Gesellschaft. Ist die ansteigende Spiritualität etwa ein Ausdruck der Krise unserer Kultur, wie Georg Simmel sie beschrieb? Ist Spiritualität der neue Anhaltspunkt im Alltag der Menschen? Und stellt Spiritualität vielleicht sogar eine neue Kategorie neben der Religion dar?
