About the Book

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: 1, University of Nigeria (University of Nigeria, Nsukka - Department of Geology, Physical Sciences), course: Petroleum Geology - Earth Science / Geosciences, language: English, abstract: Analytical studies on lithofacies delineation, environment of deposition, stratigraphic framework, structural configuration, hydrocarbon type and distribution in the Middle to Late Miocene sequence of Niger Delta basin, were carried out in the Eastern part of the Coastal Swamp depo-belt using information obtained from 3D regional seismic volume, wireline logs, paleobathymetric and biofacies data across nine fields. This involved analyses and interpretations, aimed at establishing; the main lithofacies units, system tracts, depositional sequences, reservoirs, seals and also the influence of structures on stratigraphy and hydrocarbon trends across several oil and gas producing fields. Facies analyses reveal the occurrence of four lithofacies units. Well log sequence stratigraphic analysis and correlation across these fields indicates that ten major stratigraphic bounding surfaces, five each of sequence boundaries (SB) with ages ranging from 13.1Ma through 8.5Ma and maximum flooding surfaces (MFS) with ages between 12.8Ma and 7.4Ma respectively, were identified and correlated. Four depositional sequences were delineated and stratigraphic flattening at various ages (MFSs) indicates that there is a shift of the depo-center from north to south. Stacking patterns were delineated and interpreted as lowstand systems tract (LST), highstand systems tract (HST) and trangressive systems tract (TST) using their bounding surfaces. The alternation of these systems tracts offers good reservoir sands and source/seal shales for hydrocarbon accumulation. Paleobathymetric maps show generally, that sediments were deposited within neritic through bathyal environments at different times,
