Schon gleich am Anfang wird uns darauf hingewiesen, wie sich Franz Biberkopf in der Grossstadt zurechtfinden wird und was fur einen Weg er gehen muss, um diese Strafe abzuarbeiten. Franz Biberkopf ist gross und kraftig gebaut, sieht aber nicht besonders gut aus. Er ist ehemaliger Transportarbeiter, hat einen grossen Freundes- und Bekanntenkreis. Er sass vier Jahre lang in der Haftanstalt Berlin Tegel, weil er seine Freundin, Ida, erschlagen hatte. Nachdem er entlassen wird, versucht er sich eine Arbeit und Wohnung zu finden. Er ist angstlich, verwirrt, das Zuchthaus hat ihm zugesetzt. Berlin hat sich auch verandert. Ebenfalls wird eines der Leitmotive sofort sichtbar mit den schwebenden und von den Hausern herabrutschenden Dachern. Er nimmt also die Stadt als Bedrohung war, noch bevor er wirklich dort angekommen ist. Aus der Geschichte des Zannowich, die er von den Juden erzahlt bekommt, kann man zwei Lehren ziehen: man darf keine Angst vor der Welt haben, man muss offen fur alles sein und: die Welteroberung kann in einer Katastrophe enden. Jetzt, wo er wieder auf freiem Fuss ist, schwort er sich, anstandig zu sein. Aber sogleich vollzieht er eine alles andere als anstandige Tat: er vergewaltigt Idas Schwester, die sich nicht wirklich dagegen wehrt. Franz hat eine interessante Weltanschauung, und oft sind seine Gefuhle und Reaktionen starker und schneller als sein Verstand. Er schafft es aber tatsachlich, in den nachsten Wochen seinen Vorsatzen treu zu sein. Es geht ihm korperlich besser, er verdient sein Geld legal, als Zeitungshandler, und er hat eine Freundin, die Polin Lina. Diese Zeit, in der alles glatt geht, wird aber vom Erzahler als Gnadenfrist" karakteris
