Die Machtverhältnisse seien ungleich verteilt und die Corporate Governance Systeme der Unternehmen deshalb ineffizient. Aus diesem Grund beschäftigen sich viele Studien damit, in wie weit Unternehmen in der Lage sind, das Prinzipal-Agent Problem zu lösen und somit eine effektive Corporate Governance zu realisieren. Diese Fähigkeit einer effektiv funktionierenden Unternehmensführung der Unternehmen wird unter anderem durch den Zusammenhang von Unternehmenserfolg und der Vergütung der Manager repräsentiert. Aber nicht nur die Effektivität der erfolgsorientierten Vergütung, auch die Sanktionsmöglichkeiten des Aufsichtsrats gegenüber dem Top-Managements in Form einer Entlassung können möglicherweise Aufschluss über die Effektivität der Corporate Governance Systeme geben. Viele Studien haben sich deshalb damit beschäftigt, ob es eine Korrelation zwischen der Entlassung eines Managers und dem Erfolg bzw. Misserfolg seines Unternehmens gibt. Diese Ausarbeitung soll deswegen durch eine strukturierte Auswertung der empirischen Arbeiten bezüglich dieser Thematik aufzeigen, ob man aufgrund der bisherigen Forschungsergebnisse von einem signifikanten Zusammenhang zwischen Entlassungswahrscheinlichkeit und Unternehmenserfolg sprechen kann.
