Marie Springer (1826 - 1907) schildert in ihren Erinnerungen das Leben an der Seite ihres Mannes von der Gründung des Unternehmens in der Berliner Breiten Straße im Jahre 1842 bis zum Tod von Julius Springer 1877. Berichtet wird vom aufmüpfigen jungen Buchhändler, der gegen die Preßgesetze revoltiert und deshalb zu drei Monaten Festungshaft verurteilt wird, vom Bürger, der während der 48er Revolution Abgeordneter im Berliner Stadtrat ist. Wir erfahren Details aus dem Leben eines Buchhändlers, der sein Sortiment zur Blüte bringt und in zäher Arbeit einen beachteten Verlag aufbaut. Das Leben in der Familie ist lebhaft, der Kreis buchhändlerischer Kollegen und liberaler Parteifreunde groß. Neben dem Aufbau eines vielseitigen Verlags bleibt Springer stets auch die Zeit für ausgedehnte Urlaubsreisen in die Schweiz und zu Aufenthalten in den Kurorten Mitteldeutschlands. Höhepunkte dieses aktiv geführten Lebens sind die Jahre im Berliner Stadtrat (1867 - 1877), zuletzt als Stellvertreter des Vorstehers, und die zweimalige Amtszeit als Erster Vorsteher des Börsenvereins der deutschen Buchhändler (1867 - 1873). - Ausführliche Anmerkungen und ein Personenregister erschließen dieses sehr persönliche Lebensdokument. Zum ersten Mal wird ein Brief Springers mit einem ausführlichen Bericht über seinen Besuch bei Jeremias Gotthelf abgedruckt. Diese Lebensskizze wurde ediert aus dem Anlaß des 65. Geburtstags von Konrad F. Springer, einem Urenkel des Verlagsgründers.
