Mit diesen Worten leitet Wieland sein Versepos Oberon ein und verweist damit zugleich aufdie Tradition desselben. Genau wie die grossen epischen Vorbilder der Zeit - genannt seienhier unter anderem Homer und Vergil - bedient sich Wieland des Anrufs der Musen, welcheihm den Hippogryfen, das Sinnbild dichterischer Fantasie satteln sollen, um noch einmal mitihm ins 'alte romantische Land' - romantisch steht hier fur das 'katholische Mittelalter imGegensatz zum klassischen Altertum'2 - zu fliehen.Dass Wieland hierbei die Worte 'noch einmal' (!) wahlt ist nicht verwunderlich, denn auch erhat nach seiner Arbeit am Agathon erkannt, dass der Roman - wie es Blankenburg treffendformuliert - 'der legitime Erbe des alten Epos werden konnte.'3 Dennoch halt er am Traumeines 'Epos en miniature'4, wenn das 'grosse Epos im 18. Jahrhundert schon keinen echtenLebensgrund mehr hat'5, fest. So unternimmt er noch zweimal mit Idris und Zenide, als auchmit dem Neuen Amadis den Versuch, ein scheinbar vollgultiges Epos zu schaffen, bevor ihm1780 mit dem Oberon die Verwirklichung dieses Traumes gelingt. Noch ein letztes Mal alsomacht er sich mit seinem geflugelten Dichterross auf den Weg, bevor der Roman - eine Gattungder sich Wieland selbst spater verstarkt zuwendet - seine Nachfolge antreten darf.Betrachtet man die Anfangsworte des Oberon jedoch vor dem Hintergrund des letzten derVersepen Wielands Klelia und Sinibald - auf das im weiteren Verlauf noch explizit eingegangenwird - ergibt sich eine etwas andere Interpretation. Nun heisst es: Noch ein letztes Malsoll das geflugelte Dichterross ihn auf seine Schultern nehmen und mit ihm ins 'alte romantischeLand' fliehen, bevor in Klelia und Sinibald eine Absage an den Oberon mit seiner Marchenhaftigkeitformuliert und ein vollig neues dichterisches Programm ins Leben gerufen wi
