Dennoch stellt sich die Frage, ob eine Untersuchung r mischer Kriegf hrung heute noch milit rische Relevanz ber rein historisches Interesse hinaus haben kann. Selbst wenn man dies f r eine sehr enge Auslegung einer sicherlich pointierten Aussage h lt, so ist doch auff llig, dass neuzeitliche Milit rs und Milit rtheoretiker zwar dem Altertum gewisse Aufmerksamkeit zollten, selten aber jener bereits angesprochenen L cke, hinter der sich offensichtlich das Mittelalter verbirgt. Die Chronologie trennt im Nachhinein Altertum und Mittelalter. Historische Analysen arbeiten die weitreichenden Unterschiede zwischen mittelalterlicher und antiker Welt klar heraus. F r die Zeitgenossen stellte sich dies jedoch anders dar. Der Prozess der geistigen, kulturellen, konomischen und politischen Wandlung durch die Sp tantike in das Mittelalter war ein langer, komplexer Vorgang, der f r sie in seiner Gesamtheit kaum zu berschauen war.
