Vorliegende Arbeit versucht durch die Herausarbeitung eines bisher wenig beachteten, aber gleichzeitig bedeutenden Aspekt in der Theorie Adornos, einen Beitrag fur eine mogliche Reaktualisierung seiner Arbeiten zu leisten. Dieser Aspekt, individuelles, durch die gesellschaftlichen Verhaltnisse erzeugtes Leid, ist 'innerhalb der Rezeption der Kritischen Theorie bislang leider weitgehend unerforscht geblieben' (Honneth). Diesem Befund Honneths folgend, macht es sich vorliegende Arbeit zur Aufgabe, die Bedeutung von Leid in der Gesellschaftstheorie Adornos zu untersuchen und dessen Funktion zu explizieren. Die Ausrichtung meiner Arbeit folgt der Uberzeugung, dass die Funktion von Leid als Motor fur gesellschaftlichen Widerstand und Kritik, wie sie sowohl in der Kritischen Theorie im allgemeinen als auch speziell in den Werken Adornos zu finden ist, in den Ansatzen der neueren Kritischen Theorie konzeptuell unberucksichtigt bleibt.Um die Bedeutung der Kategorie Leid in einen grosseren theorie- und ideengeschichtlichen Zusammenhang zu stellen, wird in einem erstem Schritt die Idee der Kritischen Theorie und insbesondere die Bedeutung individuellen Leides darin skizziert. Nach der allgemeinen Auseinandersetzung mit der Kritischen Theorie wird Leid in der Theorie Adornos untersucht. Die Arbeit schliesst mit einem Kapitel, welches die wesentlichen Befunde zusammenfasst und auf die These nach dem Mehrwert in Adornos Theorie in Gestalt des Leidensbegriffs zuruckkommt.Mit ihrer Ausrichtung leistet vorliegende Arbeit einen Beitrag in der theoretischen Diskussion um eine der Gegenwart angemessenen Kritischen Theorie. Eine bedeutende Aufgabe hierbei ist, die Tendenzen zur Verdinglichung sowohl - bereits klassisch formuliert - in der Okonomie als auch durch Kommunikation in der Gesellschaft als ganzer freizulegen und deren Zusammenhange zu untersuchen. Durch die Verteidigung vor-kognitiver Elemente und der hiermit verbundenen Kritik an der Theorie kommunikativen Handelns kann in diesem Zusammenhang, gleichsam indirekt, die negative, das heisst verdinglichende Seite einer Orientierung an kommunikativer Praxis dargelegt werd
