Elias Canettis Die Blendung fand im deutschen Sprachraum erst spat die Anerkennung als eines der wichtigsten Werke des 20. Jahrhunderts und Klassikers der Moderne. Wurde der Roman in der angelsachsischen Welt schon fruh 'von der seriosen Kritik neben Joyce und Kafka diskutiert', so konnte das 1931 fertig gestellte und 1936 in einer ersten Auflage im Reichner Verlag in Wien erschienene Werk erst nach einer Neuauflage 1963 bei der deutschen Literaturkritik Beachtung finden. Diese war jedoch selbst dann noch nicht offen fur eine die sprachliche und gesellschaftskritische Leistung des Romans anerkennende Rezeption: Hans Magnus Enzensberger bezeichnete das Buch nach seiner Neuauflage als 'literarisches Monster', dessen Lekture er als 'unertraglich' empfand. Sogar 1980 noch wies Marcel Reich-Ranicki dem 'ungeniessbar[en]' Roman einen hinteren Platz innerhalb des Literaturkanons zu.Die Kraft der Blendung liegt aber gerade in ihrer ungeniessbaren Qualitat, die durch die Darstellung eines qualenden Bildes der Welt, die von abnormalen Menschen durchsetzt ist, entsteht . Diese entfremdete Welt resultiert 'wie bei Kafka oder Beckett, aus der schlichten Weglassung all dessen, was - als Zukunft, Hoffnung, Willen [..] - den 'funktionierenden', voll definierten Menschen ausmacht', und der auffalligen Erzahlweise des Romans. Canettis sprachliches Genie, das ihn in der kunstvollen Verwendung der Erzahltechnik des inneren Monologs einen Platz neben Joyce einnehmen lasst, ermoglicht es ihm 'all die bizarren Kreaturen vollig innerhalb ihrer eigenen Wahnlogik und streng im eigenen Tonfall sprechen zu lassen', ihnen sozusagen ihre jeweils eigene akustische Maske (E.C.) uberzuziehen. Durch die konsequente Verwendung der Form des Grotesken hat Canetti, wie die Aussagen der zitierten Kritiker zeigen, eine der wichtigen Funktionen des Grotesken auszuschopfen gewusst: 'durch Schockieren zu kritisieren'.Eine Analyse der grotesken Formelemente des Romans bietet sich daher als ein vielversprechender Zugang zur Blendung an. Die vorliegende Arbeit konzentriert sich dabei auf die Untersuchung der Figuren und ihrer Sprache auf groteske Elemente hin und auf die Analyse der Funktion, die Figuren- und Sprachgroteske innerhalb dieses Romans erfullen. Da der Arbeit der Terminus des Grotesken zugrunde liegt, soll im nachsten Kapitel zunachst ein Abriss uber die Bedeutung und die fur eine Annaherung an Canettis Werk wichtigen Aspekte dieses Begriffs geliefert werde
