2.Die Rolin-Madonna des Jan van Eyck: Das auf Eichenholz gemalte und im Louvre befindliche Bild aus der Hand Jan van Eycks, des Ersten Malers des funfzehnten Jahrhunderts, der so von beruhmten Historiographen der damaligen Zeit genannt wurde, wurde von einigen Zeitgenossen fur das vollkommenste Werk der damaligen Zeit angesehen.Trotz der bescheidenen Grosse von 66x62Zentimetern beherbergt das Bild auf dieser kleinen Oberflache eine ganze Welt. Fur das Werk wurden wohl die besten Holzer und Pigmente verwendet, denn das Bild befindet sich in einem guten Zustand, allerdings ist es weder signiert, noch datiert.Leider besitzt das Werk nicht mehr den Originalrahmen.Die Existenz eines mit Text versehenen Holzrahmens fand Eingang in einige Reiseberichte in der Zeit um 1700, aus denen hervorgeht, dass auf dem Rahmen eine Signatur, Datum und der Name des Auftraggebers angebracht waren. Da der Rahmen im Laufe des 18.Jahrhunderts entfernt wurde, ist eine eindeutige Identifikation des Auftraggebers und des Malers schwierig.Dennoch wird allgemein das Werk Jan van Eyck zugeschrieben und als Auftraggeber kommt hochstwahrscheinlich der burgundische Kanzler Rolin in Betracht, denn seine Gesichtszuge haben eine unbezweifelbare Ahnlichkeit mit den Darstellungen des Kanzlers in der Miniatur der Chronik des Hennegau des Jean Wauquelin von 1449 und auf der Aussenseite des von Rogier van der Weyden gemalten Altars der am 31.Dez.1451 geweihten Kapelle des Hospitals in Beaune.Der Kanzler ist in der europaischen Geschichte kein Unbekannter.In die Geschichte ist er als eine hochst diesseitig orientierte Personlichkeit eingegangen, die mit ungewohnlicher Schlauheit und Zahigkeit jahrzehntelang im Auftrag seines Herrn, des Herzog Philipp des Guten, das Herzogtum Burgund von der Schweizer Grenze bis an die Nordsee erfolgreich vergrossert hat.Schwieriger gestaltet sich die Datierung, da es keine Dokumente uber den Ursprung des Werkes gibt. Die Datierungsvorschlage reichen von 1430-1432 (Anne van Buren), uber 1433-35(Panofsky),1435-1436 bis hin zu 1437.Doch die Mehrheit in der Forschung pladiert fur die Datierung um 1435-36, also zwischen dem Arnolfini-Doppelportrat und der Madonna des Kanonikus van der Paele. Ferner war lange Zeit umstritten, wo der ursprungliche Aufstellungsort des Werkes gewesen sein mag, bevor es im Jahr 1800 nach Paris in den Louvre kam. Erst 1975 hat die Forschung den ursprunglichen Aufstellungsort ausfindig gemacht.Konkret handelt es sich
