Und welche Worte wurden Indianer wahlen, wenn sie in alten Schwarz-Weiss-Western auf Schwyzerdutsch das Kriegsbeil ausgruben? Was zunachst absurd klingt und als komodiantischer Unfug erscheint, zeigt die nahezu unbegrenzten Moglichkeiten der Filmsynchronisation, die u.a. dem modernen amerikanischen, indischen oder franzosischen Kino erst zu seiner weltweitenVerbreitung geholfen haben. Eine Technik, die ihre Anfange in der Zeit der ersten Lichtspielhauser hatte, ist zu einem essentiellen Arbeitsmittel moderner Nachrichtenagenturen, Radiostationen und Filmverleihe geworden, ohne das eine Meinungsbildung nicht mehr funktioniert. Dieser Beitrag soll einen kurzen Einblick in die Entstehungsgeschichte, die technische Herstellung und die teilweise umstrittene Verwendung bieten. Parallel hierzu steht eine Arbeit, die spezifische Eigenheiten der Untertitel beleuchtet, welche haufig als Vergleichs- und Kritikpunkt dienen.Neben der reinen Informationsfunktion, die dem Zuschauer die Inhalte der fremden Rede vermitteln soll, hat die Synchronisation auch die Aufgabe, das eigene Sprachverstandnis zu fordern, die Beziehung zur Sprachgemeinschaft zu schaffen und in erster Linie Kindern und Jugendlichen einen akustischen Zugang zum Weltgeschehen zu ermoglichen. Neben Gruppen, die aufgrundvon Einschrankungen (Seh- oder Leseschwache, Analphabetismus, Sprachminoritaten) auf Synchronisation angewiesen sind, gibt es jedoch auch entschiedene Gegner, die in der Veranderung des Tons einen massiven Eingriff in das 'heilige' Original sehen und auch aus Authentizitatsgrunden lieber auf untertitelte Versionen zuruckgreifen. Dieser Diskurs soll aber nur am Rande erwahnt werden.Dass Synchronisation in linguistischer Hinsicht auch kunstlerischen Wert haben kann, zeigt die Videoarbeit, die 2003 auf einer Ausstellung Frankfurter Kunstabsolventen des Stadels zu sehen war: Disneys 'Dschungelbuch' war so synchronisiert, dass jedes Tier eine andere Sprache erhielt, von armenisch uber slowakisch bis zu turkisch waren es mehr als 20 verschiedene.
